Its my pleasure to share some fun moments with the great Rickey Woodard, the great Saxophonist who visited with us on I Love Jazz recently.

Born into a family of musicians, Rickey Woodard hails from Nashville and was taught both saxophone and piano by his father. Along with siblings, cousins and uncles, they formed a family band in the roadhouses and clubs of Tennessee. Although his earlier gigs focused on blues and R&B, his current music leans toward jazz with a blues flavor.

Influenced by the big explosive style of Gene Ammons, Coleman Hawkins, Hank Mobley, and the intellectualism of John Coltrane, Woodard developed a distinctive, soulful and seductive style that is all his own. By his late twenties he was a permanent member of the Ray Charles Band and toured worldwide for seven years. Since then he has recorded nine (9) albums as a leader with the most recent being “Pineapple Delight.”  A popular visitor to Europe and on the international jazz festival circuit, Rickey currently works with his own quintet, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and Frank Capp Juggernaut Big Band.

In addition to playing the tenor, Rickey also plays the alto and soprano saxophones, the clarinet, flute and guitar.  He has recorded with Horace Silver, Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Krall, Michael Buble, Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Frank Capp's Juggernaut Big Band, Ernestine Anderson among many others.  Woodard has performed across the globe with legends Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, American Idol, Benny Carter, Horace Silver, and Ernestine Anderson.

Rickey Woodard intends to continue his recording career and world travel, exposing his jazz stylings to audiences far and wide.
